The reason why MTBE is under criticism is because research is demonstrating that may be causing more harm than good. MTBE is a water soluble carcinogen which has been leaching into the soil from underground MTBE storage tanks. Santa Monica lost 75% of it's drinking water wells and South Lake Tahoe lost 33% of it's wells due to MTBE contamination.

Correct, but there is a safer, I'll bet slightly more expensice alternative to MBTE(thanks for that), that could have been used instead of ethanol, 95% of which is produced in the states of Iowa and Ill and must be transported to refineries in CA, which makes ethanol a higher priced additive to the alternative chemical to MTBE(wish I new the name of it). Of course, we could always use engines that run on pure ethanol, then we would just need to increase corn production.

Has anyone bothered to figure out just how much MTBE it would take to kill someone, and just how long would it take to kill you.

or we could modify our cars to run off grain alcohol like my father in-law did
(you get funny looks when you have a garden hose in your gas tank)
he had to thin the stuff or it burned to hot

Well there's the rub. It's a presumed carcinogen but that hasn't been proven. So, if at all, it's going to manifest as cancer years after exposure. MTBE-contaminated water is said to taste like turpentine so it's not a very subtle contaminant either.

So the answer is.... I don't know.

Fill me in if you know more. I just heard on the radio that the prices may go up to £1 a litre here now. I wouldn't mind paying £1.10 if I knew the oil companies were donating some of it to help the people. And are they gonna go down when the refineries are rebuilt? I bet they won't.
Negative, crude oil prices in the Middle East were rising before the hurricane. They were over $70 a barrell last time I checked. Mix that in with the hurricane messing up the production in the US and you've got a reasonable hike. To further flame the situation, add crazy morons who have to save $0.30/gallon b/c they know the prices will go up. This creates a higher demand where there is already a lack of supply. Thus, the price increase, although astronomical to some, is warranted.

Gas was $3.39 here this morning.

I just moved to the USA about a week ago, and the gas prices here are cheap compared to what I got before.

Yep. Most of us in the US don't realize how good we've got it.

OPEC probably doesn't want to help us out.

I remember some were saying that it was because of china's usage for gas are growing in such a rapid rate that the gas company are now battling for some gas for themselves.

well... I guess that might hold some truth, if suddenly 1-2 billion people all of sudden decide to use car instead of bicycle...

The oil prices will never go down. Ever. We have already passed the halfway point of the worlds oil reserves.

China and the USA are wasting and consuming so much gas that I'm not surprised if it doubles within a two year span.

Looks like the Governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm has price capped the gas at $2.99/gallon.

Way to Go Jenny!!

Sure beats $3.59/gallon that I was starting to see around town.

Thats it, I'm moving. Excellent move by the Governor, wish Romney would get up off his ass and do something too >.> (We've been partitioning the quality of the drinking water for years - the aquaducts and water systems are in bad shape, lots of toxins. He still hasn't done anything about it, though.)
